Living the Dream Ditch Crawling Narrowboat T-Shirt | Funny Canal Boat Shirt | Personalised Canal Gift | Fat Boris Canal Collection
"Ditch crawling" is the affectionate term boaters use for slow-paced cruising on shallow, narrow canals, which historically resemble ditches. It involves navigating a 57 ft or 70 ft steel narrowboat through tight spaces, managing vegetation, and dealing with shallow drafts that frequently cause the boat to bump the bottom
Key Rules of the Ditch
Navigating these narrow channels requires specific techniques and etiquette to avoid getting stuck or annoying fellow boaters:
The 4 mph Limit: You must keep to the maximum speed limit, which is usually much slower in practice to avoid creating a destructive wash that erodes the banks.
Handling Reeds and Mud: Canals tend to silt up near the edges, especially on non-dredged stretches like the Somerset Levels. Steer down the middle of the channel, but be prepared to shift into neutral and glide over thick weed beds when passing oncoming traffic.
Braking and Turning: Narrowboats do not have brakes. When you put the engine into reverse, you lose the ability to steer. Anticipate your stops and manoeuvre well in advance.
The "Rosie and Jim" Pace: Embrace the slow, relaxed pace and ensure your crew is ready to handle locks and moorings.
